A welcome trend that’s become increasingly evident at the recent re:Invent conference is the cloud transformation of healthcare service providers.

In perhaps the widest-reaching example yet, Baptist Health South Florida has worked with Accenture to infuse cloud technologies across its 11 hospitals.

“Baptist started a digital transformation initiative about three years ago,” said Tony Ambrozie (pictured, right), senior vice president and chief digital information officer at Baptist Health. “The board decided that this is going to be very important for us to help our patients and consumers. And, by the way, digital transformation is kind of an umbrella. It’s really business transformation with technology, digital technologies.”

Ambrozie, alongside Deepu Kumar (pictured, left), VP and chief technology officer at Baptist Health, and Ashlee Lane (pictured, middle), managing director of Accenture’s AWS Business Group, spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Walls at the recent AWS Executive Summit at re:Invent, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed BHSF’s cloud transformation roadmap, the successes found so far and the lessons learned. (* Disclosure below.)

A patient focus is the starting point

Baptist Health is the largest healthcare provider in Southern Florida, according to Ambrozie. And its patient count is soon expected to hit 1.8 million. In addition to digitization, artificial intelligence and machine learning have been the hallmarks of the organization’s cloud transformation, Kumar added.

To meet BHSF at its point of cloud transformation needs, Accenture helped to provide the right set of personnel and skills to match the healthcare provider’s unique aspirations, according to Lane.

“We had brought the healthcare knowledge, along with the AWS knowledge and the architects,” she explained. “And we decided to look at the roadmap and make sure that we have the right team, moving at the right pace, testing everything out, and working with all the different vendors.”
