It’s a new version of its popular TDengine database that can be easily deployed and operated on cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, the company said.
TDengine is a big data processing tool that’s designed to support “internet of things” deployments, such as sensors in a factory or a web of security cameras, for example. It’s said to combine the best aspects of both traditional relational databases and NoSQL databases.
One of the key modules within TDengine is its time-series database. It’s specifically designed to handle information that’s processed chronologically. For instance, it’s used to record the heat readings from industrial temperature sensors, which have to be arranged in the exact order they’re created together with a precise timestamp, so users can track how the heat in a machine fluctuates over time. This kind of context is also relevant for other applications.
Additional functions within TDengine include caching, message queuing, subscription and stream computing. Together, they combine to form a full-stack solution for processing, querying and compressing IoT and industrial internet data that can support billions of data points.
An open-source offering, TDengine has developed a large following, earning more than 19,000 stars on GitHub. It has been deployed across more than 140,000 instances in 50 countries. TDengine isn’t satisfied with this, though, and with its newly launched cloud version it hopes it can boost adoption of the platform.
“Not all companies have the expertise, time, or resources to fully support a time-series database infrastructure, especially as data continues to flood in and use cases scale,” said TDengine founder and Chief Executive Jeff Tao. “TDengine Cloud enables developers to stand up a time-series data platform in seconds and removes all the ongoing operational and management burdens now and as those applications and use cases scale in the future.”
TDengine Cloud is based on TDengine 3.0, which launched last month with support for containers and the container orchestration software Kubernetes. The latest version is said to decouple compute and storage to enable dynamic scaling and deployment across public, private and hybrid clouds.
With TDengine Cloud, users get all of these advantages in a fully managed package. What that means is simplified setup and management, fast and easy data ingestion, and easier data analytics and sharing, the company said.
